It’s that time of the year and we can’t wait to roll out the Mamey (also known as Zapote) smoothie. This tropical fruit is a little sweet and has an incredible creamy texture, similar to an avocado, has hints of pumpkin, caramel and almond to it. Growing up I remember my dad whipping up mamey smoothies for me and it brings back so many great memories. His recipe was a little more simple, whole milk, mamey and sugar. His version is really good but we wanted our smoothie to be on the healthier side and have fall flavors.
So Whats Mamey Fruit?
Mamey is a tropical fruit that looks like a large almond (about the size of a coconut) it has a bright orange flesh and the texture is very similar to an avocado. The origin of this fruit is uncertain but research says it could have originated in Florida, the Caribbean or Central America. Mamey also has a lot of nutritional value and health benefits.
